Same sound words are known as homonyms, homophones and homographs. Homonyms can be both homophones and homographs. Homophones are same sound words with same or different spelling. Homographs are words with same spelling but are not necessarily same sound words.

Same sound words with different spelling

Homophones can be two or more words with the same sound with different spelling. Examples are:

  • wear and where
  • here, hear and hare
  • to, too and two
  • there, their and they’re
  • your and you’re

Same sound words with same spelling

Homophones can also have the same sound with same spelling. These are also called homographs. Examples are:

  • bat – animal, sporting equipment or action done with a ball
  • cold – temperature, emotion, or name of an illness
  • tear – rip something or liquid in eyes
  • saw – past tense of see or sharp tool
  • fair – temporary market, place with games, or equal

Same spelling words with different sound

Homographs are words that are spelled the same but may or may not sound the same.

Examples of homographs that sound differently are:

  • read – “I like to read” and “I’ve read that book already”
  • minute – 60 seconds or tiny
  • bow – a formal way of greeting or a weapon
  • close – “it’s getting close” or “close the door”
  • desert – dry place or abandon
